    • The papers fell off the kitchen table and onto the floor. My children were running and playing as they usually do, completely unaware of anything besides the fun they were having. But in that moment, as I watched whatever little work I had accomplished journey to the floor from the breeze my children created, defeat overtook me. • I’d been trying to get sensible words on those pages for hours, and nothing seemed to make sense. I thought the papers’ descent was my sign to just let it all go. Maybe try again another day, or at another time. • Sinking further into the chair and wondering what to do next, I watched my children play. They were in the moment, having the best time, laughing, chasing and simply enjoying one another. They couldn’t care less that the toy box had fallen over, the play dough was stuck to the floor or that the caps were off half of the markers. • But there I sat, feeling stuck in the thick of things, unable to accomplish any of my goals. The laundry, fresh out of the dryer, was waiting to be folded. The pile of dishes in the sink from breakfast needed to be washed. And those fallen pages still needed to have words on them. • How could my children block out everything and maintain so much joy in the middle of what felt like mayhem to me? • This is an excerpt of a devotional I’ve written for @proverbs31ministries.     • My very first Sunday School teacher is now 98 years old. • I remember sitting and listening to the stories she’d share with us and being amazed by what she had been through. • There’s also another Mother of the church who’s 101. She cheers me on - beams and encourages me every time she sees me. • It’s a blessing to be surrounded by such depths of wisdom and experience and I’ve learned to absorb every bit of it. Even if the words don’t apply to me today, they give me hope and guidance and confidence for my own journey. • And what I know for sure is that who you listen to matters. • There’s enough noise in this world to drown out your vision, your hope and your joy, so you have to intentionally filter what you come in contact with. • You’re here on divine assignment and it’s critical to your mission that you listen to words of truth, wisdom and encouragement because they’ll challenge, equip and propel you forward. • So as you start this new week, tune out the excessive chatter and focus on the voices that offer something valuable for your journey. • Have you ever been distracted by all the information you hear?     • We all have our way of viewing and processing the world. Often, the things we’re drawn to can actually be necessary for our progress. • For me, it’s writing. The practice of knitting words together is more than something I enjoy doing. • It’s an exploration in my own healing and becoming. Not only do I use it to teach. I also use it to learn, to grow and thrive. • Without writing, my thoughts become cluttered and overwhelming. With it, my mind is clear and intentional. • Simply picking up a pen or sitting in front of a keyboard begins the therapy. The release of what matters and what doesn’t. • When you find your thing, hold onto it. Don’t let the world tell you to find another way. Your thing is a part of your journey, your healing, your thriving and becoming. • Dig deep into that space and what it offers you.     • I wanted to try it for so long. • I couldn’t remember my hair’s natural pattern. But I knew when I washed it, these amazing little curls would appear. • Then the heat was applied and every curl was blown into submission. • I also knew that if I was really being honest with myself, this wasn’t what I wanted. • I wanted to be proud about what God has given me, in every way. Including my hair. • And a clear part of this journey of evolving meant that I had to leave behind every concern about what others thought and go for it. • The experience was quite liberating. It’s like getting to know the real, originally designed me, without apology. My feelings were quite unexpected and freeing. • So I encourage you to move closer and closer towards your original design. • Think about all of the things that you do because someone else said you should. Then think about all of the things you don’t do because someone else said you shouldn’t. • If you listen long enough, you’ll hear your own voice and forge your own path.     • We’ve been eating food like products. • As a nurse and a mom, those words stopped me in my tracks. • Have we become so oblivious to the culture that we’ll accept anything and then wonder why our bodies ache and aren’t healing? • We get to choose. • We don’t have to accept just anything. • We are in control and greater control over our health and healing than we’ve been led to believe. • Our bodies are designed to support us, to heal when there is injury and return to a state of peace and harmony without our permission. • But it can’t do that effectively if we’re unaware of what we’re putting in and on our bodies. • I encourage you to join me in becoming more mindful about what you put in and on your body because, my friend, you’re meant to thrive. • Have you ever considered how many toxins you come in contact with each day, even in your food?!
