Mullein is a plant used in respiratory tonics. It’s an expectorant, meaning it helps the body get rid of excess mucous, and it also helps soothe mucous membranes. Mullein can be taken by mouth for coughs and colds, or used in steam inhalation for respiratory tract discomforts. It can also help with breathing conditions such as pneumonia and asthma, and helps to soothe sore throats.
Mullein has antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antibacterial properties, making it a very powerful and effective healing agent.
The flowers, leaves, and roots of mullein can be used for medicinal purposes. Often consumed as tea, mullein can also be taken as a supplement, macerated into mullein extract or made into a syrup.
The mullein leaf has small hairs that if not filtered out prior to consumption may cause irritation of the mouth and throat.
