There is a moment most women know well. The meeting ends. The last child is finally in bed. The house goes quiet. And instead of feeling relief, your body keeps going – heart still elevated, shoulders still at your ears, mind still rehearsing the list of everything that didn’t get done today.

You tell yourself to relax. And nothing happens.

This is not a discipline problem. It is not a mindset problem. It is a nervous system problem. And the good news is that your body was designed with a built-in solution – one that most women have never been introduced to.

It is called the vagus nerve.

 

What the Vagus Nerve Actually Is

The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body. It originates in the brainstem and travels downward through the neck, chest, and abdomen, touching the heart, the lungs, the gut, and nearly every major organ along the way. The word “vagus” comes from the Latin for wandering – and that name is fitting, because this nerve does not stay in one place. It reaches.

The vagus nerve is the primary pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system, which is the branch responsible for rest, digestion, recovery, and repair. When it is functioning well, it acts as a natural brake on the stress response. It is the physiological counterpart to the fight-or-flight activation most women spend the majority of their day inside.

When the vagus nerve is healthy and active, the body can move fluidly between stress and recovery. When it is underactive – or when chronic stress keeps it suppressed – the nervous system loses its ability to return to baseline. The brake stops working. And women are left wondering why they cannot wind down even when they desperately want to.

 

Understanding Vagal Tone

Researchers use the term “vagal tone” to describe the activity level of the vagus nerve. A person with high vagal tone has a nervous system that can respond to stress and then recover from it efficiently. A person with low vagal tone tends to stay activated longer, recover more slowly, and experience more difficulty regulating both emotion and physical sensation.

Vagal tone is often estimated through heart rate variability, or HRV — the subtle variation in time between heartbeats. A higher HRV generally reflects a more responsive autonomic nervous system. Research published in Psychological Medicine has found that low HRV is associated with anxiety, depression, and chronic inflammation.

Low vagal tone is not a character flaw. It is a physiological response to chronic, unrelenting stress. And it is remarkably common among women who have been in caregiving roles – professionally or personally – for extended periods of time.

If you have been taking care of everyone around you, and your body feels like it has forgotten how to rest, your vagus nerve may be part of the story.

 

The Vagus Nerve and the Stress Response

To understand why the vagus nerve matters so much, it helps to understand what it is working against.

When the brain perceives a threat – whether that threat is a car swerving into your lane or an inbox with forty-seven unread messages – the sympathetic nervous system activates. Cortisol and adrenaline flood the body. Heart rate increases. Digestion slows. The immune system shifts. Blood flow is redirected toward the muscles. The body prepares to fight or flee.

This is a protective and intelligent response. The problem is that the modern caregiver’s nervous system was never designed to run this response continuously. Back-to-back appointments, emotional labor, school pickups, unfinished conversations, financial pressure, and the silent accumulation of everyone else’s needs create a stress load that does not have a natural off switch.

The vagus nerve is meant to be that off switch.

When the vagus nerve fires, it signals the body that the threat has passed. It slows the heart. It deepens the breath. It restores blood flow to the digestive organs. It quiets the inflammatory response. It sends a message from body to brain: you are safe. You can rest now.

The body has been trying to send you that message. The vagus nerve is the wire it travels on.

 

Simple Ways to Activate the Vagus Nerve

This is where the science becomes practical. The vagus nerve is not passive – it responds to specific, deliberate inputs. And many of the most effective vagal stimulation techniques are simple enough to do inside the constraints of an ordinary day.

Slow, extended exhales. The breath is one of the most direct access points to the vagus nerve. Inhaling activates the sympathetic system; exhaling activates the parasympathetic. Extending the exhale beyond the length of the inhale – breathing in for four counts, out for six or eight – directly stimulates vagal activity. Even five minutes of this pattern can produce a measurable shift in heart rate variability.

Humming, singing, and chanting. The vagus nerve runs through the vocal cords and innervates the muscles of the throat. Activities that engage those muscles – humming, singing, even reading aloud – create vibration that activates vagal tone. This is one of the reasons corporate worship has such a profound calming effect for many women of faith. The body is responding to something it was designed to receive.

Cold water on the face. Splashing cold water on the face, or briefly exposing the neck to cool temperatures, triggers what is known as the diving reflex, which stimulates the vagus nerve and reduces heart rate. This is not elaborate. A cold washcloth before bed takes thirty seconds.

Gargling. Gargling with water for thirty to sixty seconds engages the muscles at the back of the throat, which are innervated by the vagus nerve. It is an unusual-sounding intervention, but the physiological rationale is sound.

Prayer and meditation. Focused, quiet prayer produces many of the same neurological conditions as formal meditation – slower respiration, reduced cortisol, increased heart rate variability. For women of faith, this is not a wellness technique. It is a returning. The body settles when the mind rests in the presence of God. That settling has a measurable nervous system signature.

Gentle movement and yoga. Slow, intentional movement – particularly practices that incorporate breath with motion – has been shown to improve vagal tone over time. This does not require an hour-long class. Ten minutes of gentle stretching with deliberate breathing counts.

Quality sleep. Vagal tone is partly restored during deep sleep. Chronic sleep deprivation suppresses parasympathetic activity and keeps the nervous system in a low-grade state of activation. Sleep is not a luxury. It is one of the primary ways the vagus nerve recovers its function.

 

Why This Matters for Women, Specifically

Women are not imagining it. Research consistently shows that women experience higher rates of anxiety, chronic stress, and stress-related illness than men — and a significant part of that disparity is rooted in nervous system load.

The typical woman who finds her way to this space is not fragile. She is strong in ways that have been quietly depleting her. She manages complexity at work and at home. She absorbs the emotional weight of the people around her. She pushes through when she is exhausted because there is no one else to push through for her.

That kind of sustained output leaves the parasympathetic system underresourced. The vagus nerve, chronically underactivated, stops catching the body before it hits the floor.

What I want you to hear is this: the fact that your body is struggling to rest is not evidence that something is wrong with you. It is evidence that your nervous system has been doing a heroic and unsustainable amount of work. And that is something that can change.

 

Your Body Was Designed to Recover

One of the most meaningful things I believe – both as a nurse and as a woman of faith – is that the body has innate healing wisdom. It is not passive. It is not failing you. It is doing precisely what it was designed to do with the inputs it has been given.

The vagus nerve is a reminder that recovery is not something you have to manufacture. It is something your body already knows how to do. It simply needs the right conditions to do it.

That is what integrative care is for. That is what practices like breathwork, sound healing, prayer, rest, and intentional movement do – not because they are trends, but because they speak directly to the biological systems God built into you for restoration.

Your body has a built-in relaxation switch.

You were given it on purpose.
