Irregular sleep schedules disrupt this rhythm even when total sleep hours are adequate. Waking at the same time each morning, including weekends, is one of the highest-leverage sleep practices available to you.
Light exposure management. Morning light exposure in the first hour after waking signals to your brain that the day has begun and helps set the timing of evening melatonin release. Conversely, exposure to bright or blue-toned light in the hour or two before bed suppresses melatonin and delays sleep onset. This is not a minor effect. Research from Harvard Medical School found that blue light at night shifts the circadian rhythm by as much as three hours.
Temperature. Core body temperature naturally drops as the body prepares for sleep. A cool sleeping environment – typically between 65 and 68 degrees Fahrenheit – supports this process. A room that is too warm can prevent the body from fully cycling into the deeper stages of sleep.
A winding-down period. The nervous system does not transition from full activation to restful sleep instantaneously.
